V is for Volcano

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Robert Frost.

And so began our Grade Six Geology block, learning the words of Robert Frost.

Students love to hear about volcanoes, and lava, and earthquakes, and the forming of mountains.

It just makes us feel so.....

small.

It just makes us feel how powerful and huge nature is.

It makes us think, and ponder, and be in awe of it all.

And besides, how fun is it to learn how to spell and say Popocatepetl?

We learned a musical spoken word piece in Grade Eight called the Geographical Fugue.

One of our favourite lines was:

Popocatepetl is not in Canada, rather in Mexico, Mexico, Mexico!

  1. Volcanos ARE fascinating... they certainly do remind us just how small and powerless we are... and they lead to such amazing permanent things after their changing spontaneous unpredictability...
Our little island here ( The Rock) is the result of a volcanic eruption under the sea back in the mists of time... our local beach has fantastic rock formations at low tide that remind us of volcanoes every day... You'd LOVE it!

  2. All of nature is fascinating. Lot's of destruction though lately with the Peru Volcano and the earthquakes all around the world - Nepal, California, India, New Zealand. Mother Nature is not very happy with us.

  5. Hello there.
It's sad with the loss of lives and displacement of people, but all of these volcanic eruptions and forces of nature were prophesied in the Bible. Jesus said we would know the sign of his presence at Matthew 24:3-14.
    Thanks for sharing.
